Martha McDonald is an interdisciplinary artist whose performances and installations feature handcrafted costumes and objects that she activates through gestures of making and unmaking and singing to transmit narrative. McDonald’s practice often focuses on site-specific “interventions” in historic house museums, libraries and gardens which investigate the sites and their stories to explore how these public places connect with personal histories and emotional states.

McDonald is the Howorth Speaker for 2018, a prestigious lecture series that has hosted speakers such as Linda Weintraub, Mary D. Garrard, and Jane Hammond. McDonald will be doing a presentation in the spring Performance Art class and conducting studio visits with current upperclassmen in the studio department.

Tableaux Vivant!

Art History Class - 1.jpg

The students in Dr. Elise Smith‘s 18th and 19th Century Art were divided into groups and each group given a list of paintings that they’d studied in class to recreate in tableaux vivants. These “living pictures” were a kind of parlor game that was popular in the 19th century. Other students then had to guess what the painting was – not easy for either the recreators or the guessers, but it was a fun alternative way to learn about pose and composition!

Current Studio Art Majors

A shot of the current studio art majors after discussions with international artist Dr. Peju Layiwola. Upper level students in the Art department benefit from individual studio visits with artists visiting Millsaps. This helps students further develop their work with extra feedback from professionals outside the faculty.

This fall, current juniors also put together a pop up show at Float Jxn in Midtown, a burgeoning arts community on the west side of Millsaps campus. The show, entitled Piece by Piecewas part of a collaborative assignment in the junior seminar. Every year juniors are required to find a space in Jackson to install their work, advertise, and organize a reception.

“Shifting Focus”–virtual exhibition

This virtual exhibition was created by students enrolled in “Modern Art” at Millsaps College taught by Faculty Teaching Fellow Erin L. McCutcheon in Fall 2017. Organized around four key themes – urban culture, experimentation, conflict, and innovation – students invite viewers to consider how these works contributed to the ongoing and multifaceted project that is modern art.
